More than 130 years ago…

In a little village, called Villajoyosa, in Alicante province, Jaume ‘Martí’ devoted his life to the production of artisanal chocolate. This was just the beginning of a tradition that would be a part of this family right up to the present day.

It was his son Felix who, in 1914, continued his father’s trade, manufacturing chocolate for several decades, perfecting his methods and techniques and establishing a tradition that would pass on from generation to generation.

In 1952, Felix’s sons, Jaime and Pedro, carried on with the artisanal manufacture inherited from their grandfather, respecting his traditional technique.

They carried wooden boxes

in which the chocolate was packaged in cloth bags, on horse-drawn carts. They arrived at the villages of La Mancha and delivered the chocolate by hand directly to the homes of their end customers. The process was speeded up by the arrival of the railway. It was a personal sale, but very hard.

With the name of Don Quixote’s flying horse…

The chocolate was baptised Clavileño in 1960. The name expresses the power and universality of this valued food, as happens with the endearing character created by Cervantes.

Fourth generation

Today, this family tradition has been turned into a thriving food industry: the company Hermanos López Lloret, S.A., manufacturer and marketer of the ‘Clavileño Chocolate’ products.
